The Five Boro Bike Tour - a.k.a. Bike New York

Sunday, May 4, 2008 • Rain or shine

The Five Boro Bike Tour is an annual event in NYC where tens of thousands of people ride approximately 40 miles through all 5 broo’s of New York on bicycles.  The event attracts people from all over and is a sight to see.

For my family, it has been an Annual family event for a few years now, and it officially marks the end of Winter.  It is held every year on the first weekend in May and while we don’t always ride it, typically at least someone from my family or group of friends has.

In 2007, my climbing friends cam and did the ride.  Cramming into our little townhouse where 6 unruly adventurers, the likes of which Chilltown J.C. has never seen!

The Crew

This year, the Simonoviches, our transplanted San Diego clan, are going to be doing their second ride while my climbing group will also continue the tradition. So far, the crew is...

Staying at Barrett and Karen's house...

Staying at Todd and Carla's house...

Start of the Race

There are basically 2 options:
Option 1: Start at the “official” battery park start.  People start lining up VERY early to get first position.  Some as early as 5 and 6.  It’s very packed and the wait is long.  The ride officially starts at 8am.

Option 2:  Meet at 6th Ave and 14th St  between 8:00am and 8:30 and then jump into the group there (my suggestion is 14th street because there’s not a lot of steps up to street level and it’s a major hub for many of the subways for those meeting us).  The PATH train, which is 2 blocks from my house let's us off there, so it’s a hop, skip and a jump.

My personal experience is the official start isn’t all its cracked up to be and too much hassle and way too busy.  I suggest option 2.

Here’s a link to a google maps tour route site that is very good.  Use the slider on the left hand side to zoom in.

During the Race
There are rest areas at 5 spots along the way.  And there is a Support and Gear Bus if you get tired or need some bike repair.

End of the Race
There is a meeting place at the end of the race on Staten Island.  If you get there too late, all the bananas will be gone!!  :-)  I suggest we keep our cell phones with us so that if we do end up separating, we can group together and meet up.

To Bring
If you bring nothing else, bring 1 or 2 extra inner tubes and a pump.  Three years ago, I got two flats!

Bike Shop
If you need to stop by a bike shop, I suggest Cycle Craft in Parsippany.  It’s on the way to my house, right off of 280.  They’ve got a very good selection and they are very knowledgable.  There are a few others as well, however if you need serious work done on a bike, I would suggest doing it this week before you come because everyone will be in the shops getting ready for the tour.

This is definately one of the Weekend Warrior trips. Anybody can get to the city on a Sunday in May, ride till their legs hurt, and then eat some bananas at the finish line!

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."    — Robert A. Heinlein
