TRAVEL::Tickets:
Airline ticket: David of United Travel Service
David works with NW/KLM on our group fares.  He works through all the game rules I put up the $100.00 deposit per seat, through David to reserve your seat to Kilimanjaro airport from Amsterdam (I receive the deposit refund later from KLM.)

Those of you who fly on your own to Amsterdam must be at the KLM departure gate on Sunday January 16th for the 10:55 AM flight.  This leg could result in a higher fare - Check with David.  I generally fly United but I’m going with NW/KLM.  Hard to beat the lower prices offered. David will work with you on any aspect of your air travel.

Itinerary:

The climb will start on Wednesday, 19th returning to the hotel Tuesday the 25th for one night. Safari starts on Wednesday 26th with a return to the Kilimanjaro airport on Sunday the 30th.

Cargo:
We are allowed two duffle bags in the plane cargo - each up to 70 lbs.  The duffle bags should be checked all the way through to Kilimanjaro Airport in Tanzania.  (Make sure you see the Kilimanjaro Airport tag put on your bag)

One of the highlights after the climb is passing out the clothing to the porters.  Each of us should gather, and stuff, a duffle bag of used clothing. Clothes for all ages and sex, size no problem.  Warm clothes for the porters. Boots with some life left in them.  You can not imagine how a size 12 boot fits a size 9 foot.

A minimum of 50 lbs duffle size 18 inches diameter by 36 inches long.  Place a rope around the middle for added safety.  I assure you the pleasure you see in their faces is well worth the extra effort in gathering and transporting. I’ll reimburse you for the additional expense of the extra duffle bag. They can be purchased for under $20.00.  Your own personal duffle bag will be more than adequate for your Kili-Safari needs.

SAFARI:: Serengeti Select Safaris
Serengeti Select Safaris is our provider, which I’ve used in the past. This safari is the top of the line, flying Doctor membership is included.

Safari starts Wednesday Jan 26th and returns you to the airport Sunday Jan 30th for flying home. There will be a day room, shower, change, before going to the airport.

When you are on the safari, your climbing clothes will stay at the safari office.  Before our flight home we’ll be able to shower and change into our traveling home clothes.

I cannot conceive that you will need more than one 70 lb. duffle bag of personal clothes.  Your carry on for the plane bag should serve as your day pack on the climb.  The porters will carry your duffle bag - about 32 lbs maximum.

Full Safari Itinerary:

Jan 26. MARANGU/GIBBS FARM

In the morning the Serengeti Select Safari (SSS) driver will transfer you from Marangu Hotel to the SSS office in Arusha where you can leave your extra luggage. Drive to Lake Manyara National Park for game viewing. Enjoy a picnic lunch under an acacia tree overlooking the lake. In the late afternoon you will drive to Gibb’s Farm.

Overnight Gibb’s Farm. LD

Gibb’s Farm is a 15 room hotel perched on the outer slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater, 2 miles from the small town of Karatu and 60 miles from Arusha. Coffee plantations and a vegetable farm surround you, and the Ngorongoro rainforest rises above the back of the lodge. The main facilities are situated in the old farmhouse, while sleeping accommodations are in 15 double bungalows set amidst beautiful flower gardens.

Jan 27. GIBBS/ NGORONGORO CRATER

After an early breakfast, drive to the rim of Ngorongoro Crater, declared a World Heritage Site in recognition of its beauty and importance. Drop off your luggage at the lodge before descending 2,000 ft to the floor of the crater. Spend the day game viewing in the crater. This is one of the last places on earth where you may see the endangered black rhinos. In the late afternoon ascend to your lodge on the rim overlooking the crater.

Overnight Ngorongoro Serena Lodge. BLD

Considered the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’, the Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact, unflooded caldera in the world. It has the largest permanent concentration of wildlife in Africa. A 2,000 foot descent brings you to the floor of the crater, which is 12 miles wide. It is one of the best areas on the continent for viewing the endangered black rhino and sustains over 350 species of birds as well as large numbers of big game, including lion and elephant.

Located on the Crater rim, the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge affords breath taking views of the Ngorongoro Crater below. The lodge, nestled into the rim of the crater, is built mainly from natural stone and local wood and is overgrown with natural vegetation. It has 75 rooms that are decorated with prehistoric wall motifs and each has a balcony overlooking the Crater.

Jan 28. NGORONGORO CRATER/SERENGETI

After breakfast you will drive to Serengeti National Park. Stop enroute at Olduvai Gorge, the archaeological site where Mary and Louis Leakey discovered the 1.7 million year-old human fossils. Game view enroute to the lodge. In order to maximize your game viewing time, you will have a picnic lunch on the plains. The famous migration of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra should be gathering in the Lake Ndutu area at this time of year. Arrive at the lodge in the late afternoon.

Overnight Ndutu Safari Lodge. BLD

The Serengeti is Tanzania’s largest and most famous park and has the largest concentration of migratory game animals in the world. The name ‘Serengeti’ is derived from the Maasai language and appropriately means ‘endless plain’ . Most of the park, which is a World Heritage Site, is a vast open plain broken by rock outcroppings (kopjes) and some acacia savannah and swamps. Nearly 500 species of birds and 25 species of large plains animals can be found in the Serengeti. Animals you may see are wildebeest, zebra, lion, cheetah, topi, Grants gazelle, Thomson gazelle, eland, giraffe, elephant, hippo, and crocodile. In the Lobo area, forests of large mahogany and fig trees are

found along the rivers where Patas monkeys, kingfishers, fish eagles, and turacos may be seen. Other wildlife found in the Lobo area includes grey bush duikers, mountain reedbuck, Maasai giraffe, and elephant. The Seronera valley is famous for leopards and lions, both of which can usually be seen and photographed here without difficulty. Leopards should be looked for in the branches of the yellow-barked acacia and sausage trees along the watercourses. They often carry their prey up into the branches of tall trees to get it out of reach of lions, hyenas and to a lesser extent vultures.

 The setting for Ndutu Safari Lodge is a small lake set in beautiful acacia woodland with the mighty backdrop of the Ngorongoro Crater Highlands. The lodge still has the informal, intimate feeling of the original bush camp, built by legendary hunter George Dove in the 1960’s, but now 32 comfortable cottages with bathrooms have replaced the tents. At night you can sit around the campfire and look up at the magnificent African sky while listening to the sounds of animals in the distance. In the morning you’ll be awakened by the sounds of birds.

Jan 29. SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK.

Game view on the way to the Seronera area of the Serengeti. Take along a picnic lunch so that you are not rushed and can enjoy the migration. Visit the Serengeti Visitors Center if time permits.

Overnight Serengeti Serena Lodge. BLD

The Serengeti Serena Lodge is set high on a hill with breathtaking vistas of sweeping grasslands and the unspoiled wilderness landscape of the Serengeti plains.

The lodge, inspired by a traditional Africa village, is made up of separate rondavels “huts” with views of the vast Serengeti plains. In the evening there are traditional dances and performances by a guitarist. Enjoy the swimming pool in between game drives.

Jan 30. SERENGETI/ ARUSHA.

After breakfast you will drive back to Arusha, stopping enroute at Gibbs farm for lunch. After lunch continue on to Arusha where you will have a dayroom at the Ilboru Safari Lodge so that you can shower and repack. In the late afternoon you will transfer to the airport for your flight back home.
